History
2005
The idea of promoting Aboriginal language through fashion was initially tested at the Fringe Festival. At the time, the company name was Airo Wear. I began with promoting a greeting in four languages: Cree, Saulteaux, Dene, and Metis. The concept was successfully embraced by both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people; however, the idea was put on hold so that I could continue my education.
2006
I was pursuing a marketing degree with the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan, and thus there was no business activity during this year.
2007
I returned to my business after graduation in April and began constructing the brand identity, which included: business cards, an e-commerce website, photo-shoots and print materials. I decided to begin by promoting only the Cree language to keep costs down and because it was a langauge I was most familiar with. I eventually introduced two more phrases. With the previous phrase, tansi, there were now a total of three words/phrases: tansi, peace and “Got Bannock?”.
2008
By January of 2008 business operations were well underway both online and via direct sales at various events in Saskatchewan, such as: the Aboriginal Music Festival, Pow-wows, and FSIN Assemblies. The phrase “Got Bannock?” was phased out in June. In September, an executive decision was made to change the company name to tansi clothing because tansi resonated more with people than Airo. Also, I did not own the dot com of Airo Wear, which made online business difficult and the dot com for tansi clothing was available.
2009
tansi clothing goes GREEN.
tansi clothing will only promote clothing/products that are made from bamboo or organic fabrics/materials. tansi clothing’s goals include; providing clothing made from the highest quality fabrics; and donating to non-profit organizations that are in line with tansi ideals and that are giving back to Aboriginal communities. tansi clothing will also in the future be adding new positive and inspirational phrases/words for a total of five projected phrases: tansi, peace, “don’t give up”, green and strength.
